Duke returned to the top spot in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll on Monday, while the latest big win for St. John's vaulted the Red Storm into the Top 25 for the first time in more than a decade.
The Blue Devils (25-2, 12-1 ACC) were fifth in last week's poll, but the four teams ahead of them all lost -- the first time the top four teams in the poll all lost since the week of Nov. 25, 2003.
Kansas fell one spot to No. 2, followed by Ohio State, San Diego State and Texas. Pitt, BYU, Purdue, Notre Dame and Arizona round out the top 10.
Duke received 19 of 31 possible first-place votes in the poll, voted on by a panel of 31 Division I coaches. Also receiving votes were Ohio State (four), Pittsburgh (four), San Diego State (three) and Kansas (one). Duke also was No. 1 in The Associated Press media poll.
The loss of the top spot in the poll isn't the only issue facing Kansas. The school announced Monday that junior guard Tyshawn Taylor, a starter, has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.
The rough week for the highly ranked started Monday when Kansas lost 84-68 at Kansas State. Saturday was the rough day for former No. 2 Texas, which lost 70-67 at Nebraska, and former No. 4 Pittsburgh, which lost 60-59 to St. John's at Madison Square Garden.
Third-ranked Ohio State completed the quartet on Sunday by becoming the only one to lose to a fellow ranked team, 76-63 to then-No. 11 Purdue. The Boilermakers moved up three spots to No. 8 in this week's poll.
The week of Nov. 25, 2003 saw No. 1 Connecticut, No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Michigan State and No. 4 Arizona all lose.
St. John's is ranked 25th this week. A Big East and national power in the 1980s, the Red Storm haven't reached the NCAA tournament since 2002. The last time they were ranked in the coaches' poll was the final poll of the 1999-2000 season, when they were 18th.
This year, the Red Storm (17-9, 9-5 Big East) have made a habit out of knocking off highly ranked teams, with wins over Duke, Notre Dame, No. 15 Connecticut and No. 11 Georgetown in addition to last week's upset of Pitt.
Following Georgetown in the poll is No. 12 Wisconsin, followed by Florida, Villanova, Connecticut, Louisville, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Syracuse.
Missouri, Kentucky, Utah State, Temple and St. John's round out the Top 25.
Former No. 23 Saint Mary's dropped out of the poll.
