Judge sets Chris Simms trial date

NEW YORK -- Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Chris Simms has rejected a plea deal after being accused of driving while high on marijuana.
Simms passed on prosecutors' offer Friday to let him plead guilty to driving while impaired. It's a traffic violation, not a crime.
His punishment would have included a $500 fine, five days of community service and a 90-day drivers' license suspension.
After Simms turned down the offer, a judge set a March 1 trial date. The charges include a misdemeanor that could send the 30-year-old Simms to jail for a year if he's convicted.
Simms was pulled over July 1. He denies a police claim that he admitted smoking marijuana.
He's a son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms.

OMG of the WEEK: International Jewel Thief, 80, Nabbed in San Diego

I was browsing my daily news this morning, when I came across a story of an 80 year old "international jewel thief".

Dressed to the nines, she waltzes into a high-end jewelry store in Monte Carlo -- or Paris or Las Vegas -- and smiles at the clerk. She asks to try on a ring or a watch -- wait, no not that one, the other one. How about this one?
After trying on and admiring several pieces, all the while bantering with the sales clerk, she decides that, no, she won't be buying anything today. She glides out as gracefully as she came in and the clerk goes back to work.
It will be hours before the clerk realizes one of the more expensive pieces – a ring that nice old lady had tried on -- is missing.
That's how Doris Payne, now 80, has been robbing jewelry stores blind for the better part of a century, her lawyer told ABC News today.
Payne has served time in six states for theft. Her most recent conviction was Wednesday. Payne was found guilty of walking out of a San Diego, Calif., Macy's with a diamond ring worth nearly $9,000 on Jan. 1, 2010.

According to her lawyer, Gretchen von Helms, Payne maintains that she has been wrongfully convicted – that it is a case of mistaken identity. Whatever the case, it's just the latest conviction in a career of thievery so notorious that, according to von Helms "if there's been a jewelry theft and an African-American woman did it, everyone would say, 'It must've been Doris Payne.'"

"She's had a history of other times where she's been accused righteously, and also accused falsely," said von Helms. "She has a certain notoriety."
While Payne denies the latest crime attributed to her, she admitted that she makes a life on the other side of the law, sometimes in exotic locales.
"When I cross-examined her, I said, 'This is what you do. You're an international jewel thief,' and she said, 'Yes,'" San Diego Deputy District Attorney John Pro said.

Here's the video discussing more..... and believe me, I am just as shocked as you are:

Lawrence Taylor pleads guilty, yet is serving no JAIL TIME

Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges in court Thursday, stemming from a May 6 arrest for felony statutory rape. He will receive no jail time and is expected to be sentenced to six years probation.
Taylor pled guilty to one count of soliciting a prostitute and a second count of sexual misconduct in having sex with a woman without consent. Since the victim in the case was 16, by law she was not old enough to give consent.
In court, under oath, Taylor admitted that he had six with a 16-year-old and he said that he was aware that results of a DNA test identifield him.
"She told me she was 19," Taylor said in court.
On March 22, a hearing will be held to determine the level of his sex-offender status. There also was an order of protection against him that was renewed.
Harry Carson, his former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer, was in the courtroom and gave Taylor a supportive greeting when he arrived.
"I've always seen a distinction between Lawrence Taylor and LT," Carson said.
In New York, ignorance of a person's age is not a defense against statutory rape. The age of consent in New York is 17.
Taylor was arrested early in the morning of May 6 at a Holiday Inn in Montebello, N.Y. Police said they were led to his hotel room by a 16-year-old runaway who had allegedly been forced into prostitution by Rasheed Davis.
Davis pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking, while Taylor pleaded not guilty to charges of third-degree rape, patronizing a prostitute and endangering the welfare of a child. The rape charge carried a maximum of four years in jail.
Taylor has cooperated with authorities in their investigation of sex trafficking in the New York area.
At the time of the incident, Ramapo town supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence alleged that Taylor paid her $300 for sex. Taylor posted the $75,000 bail later that day.
Aidala on Dec. 8 asked Rockland County Judge William Kelly to dismiss the charges on grounds that Taylor's fourth amendment rights were violated when the hotel room was searched upon his arrest. Physical evidence, including condoms, was recovered in the search. Kelly denied the request.
Taylor led the Giants to two Super Bowl titles, in 1987 and 1991. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Rockland County prosecutor Arthur Ferraro said on Dec. 8 that Taylor had been offered a plea deal which included six months in jail and 10 years' probation if he pled guilty to a felony, but he also would have needed to register as a sex offender. At the time, Aidala said the terms were unacceptable.

Body of Lorenzen Wright found in Memphis

Memphis authorities have found the body of former NBA and University of Memphis basketball player Lorenzen Wright, missing since July 19, a media report said Wednesday.

Law enforcement officials discovered the body of Wright in a wooded area in southeast Memphis, police sources confirmed to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Wright was believed to be carrying some amount of cash when he was last seen July 19 in Memphis, and a Collierville police report released Wednesday raised concerns he may be the victim of foul play.

Wright's sister, Savia Archie, told WREG.com in Memphis last Friday that Wright was last seen when he was expected to leave the city, after flying to Memphis to visit friends and his six children.

Lorenzen Wright

Wright was expected to drive back to the Atlanta area with his six children and a friend, after leaving his ex-wife's Memphis-area home, the Commercial Appeal reported.

Wright played in college at Memphis and later for the Grizzlies as a pro. He last played in the league for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2008-09 season.

The Los Angeles Clippers drafted Wright with the seventh overall pick in the 1996 draft. He spent the first three seasons of his NBA career with the Clippers before being traded to the Hawks for two first-round picks, which turned into Quentin Richardson and Chris Wilcox.

In 2001, the Hawks dealt Wright to the Grizzlies, along with Pau Gasol and Brevin Knight, for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Jamaal Tinsley.

He returned to the Hawks in 2006 as a free agent but was on the move again in 2008, traded to the Kings in a six-player deal that netted Atlanta Mike Bibby. Wright signed with the Cavaliers as a free agent before the 2008-09 season.

He had career averages of 7.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
