The "Ivory Queen of Soul" Teena Marie Dies at 54

teena marie
LOS ANGELES — Teena Marie, the “Ivory Queen of Soul” who developed a lasting legacy with her silky soul pipes and with hits like “Lovergirl,” ”Square Biz,” and “Fire and Desire” with mentor Rick James, has died. She was 54.
The confirmation came from a publicist, Jasmine Vega, who worked with Teena Marie on her last album, 2009’s “Congo Square.” Her manager, Mike Gardner, also confirmed her death to CNN.
The singer continued performing in recent years after overcoming an addiction to prescription drugs. It was unclear late Sunday where and how she died.
Marie certainly wasn’t the first white act to sing soul music, but she was arguably among the most gifted and respected, and was thoroughly embraced by the black audience.
Even before she started her musical career, she had a strong bond with the black community, which she credited to her godmother. She gravitated to soul music and in her youth decided to make it her career.
Marie made her debut on the legendary Motown label back in 1979, becoming one of the very few white acts to break the race barrier of the groundbreaking black-owned record label that had been a haven for black artists like Stevie Wonder, the Jackson Five, the Supremes and Marvin Gaye.
Marie was the protege of the masterful funk wizard James, with whom she would have long, turbulent but musically magical relationship.
The cover of her debut album, “Wild and Peaceful,” did not feature her image, with Motown apparently fearing black audiences might not buy it if they found out the songstress with the dynamic, gospel-inflected voice was white.
But Marie notched her first hit, “I’m A Sucker for Your Love,” and was on her way to becoming one of R&B’s most revered queens. During her tenure with Motown, the singer-songwriter and musician produced passionate love songs and funk jam songs like “Need Your Lovin’,” ”Behind the Groove” and “Ooh La La La.”
Marie’s voice was the main draw of her music: Pitch-perfect, piercing in its clarity and wrought with emotion, whether it was drawing from the highs of romance or the mournful moments of a love lost. But her songs, most of which she had a hand in writing, were the other major component of her success.
Tunes like “Cassanova Brown” ”Portuguese Love” and “Deja Vu (I’ve Been Here Before)” featured more than typical platitudes on love and life, but complex thoughts with rich lyricism.
And “Fire and Desire,” a duet with Rick James that featured the former couple musing about their past love, was considered a musical masterpiece and a staple of the romance block on radio stations across the country.
Marie left Motown in 1982 and her split became historic: She sued the label and the legal battle led to a law preventing record labels from holding an artist without releasing any of their music.
She went to Epic in the 1980s and had hits like “Lovergirl” but her lasting musical legacy would be her Motown years.
Still, she continued to record music and perform. In 2004 and 2006 she put out two well-received albums on the traditional rap label Cash Money Records, “La Dona” and “Sapphire.”
In 2008, she talked about her excitement of being honored by the R&B Foundation.
“All in all, it’s been a wonderful, wonderful ride,” she told The Associated Press at the time. “I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

My heart goes out to her family. I know how it feels to lose a loved one. I, myself, have lost 2 this year alone.

Soulful with a Heart of Gold: A one on one w/ R&B songtress Jasmine Rhey (Video Inside)

www.twitter.com/jasminerhey
Breathtaking. Soulful. Beauty. Intuition. These words describe one artist named Jamsine. Jasmine Rhey to be exact. From the age of 12, music became her goal. Yet in song, its seems more of her soul.  I have an opportunity to listen to her music. Early night, after my shoot in LA. I snuggled into bed to finally reasearch on this talented woman. 2 hours later and with a little bit of help of the internet, I experiened more than just an "up-and-coming" artist. I listened to a woman with a story . One of hurt, triumph, fear and pain.

A student and philanthropist who aims to “change the world for the better through music, song and the way [she] lives her life.” The 22-year-old has enough talent and determination to accomplish just that.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Jasmine Rhey has been passionate about music and singing as long as she can remember. At the age of 12, she began taking vocal lessons and performing in various stage plays and musicals along with many solo gigs.

From the moment she stepped on stage, and the butterflies flew away, she knew that was where she belonged. Collaborating with other independent artists and singing cover songs at local venues was an inspiring step toward her goal of recording her own full-length album. Singing original songs that she penned, she tells her own unique story with the hope that her words may touch listeners with a postitive message.
(Excerpt of her bio via myspace.com/jasmineonthehook)

So having an opportunity to get an interview with Jasmine Rhey was an exciting one for me.

AW: Hello, Jasmine, let me take the time to say thank you for letting me interview you.. I can already say I am fan.

JR: Hey!  Thanks so much for the opportunity!

AW: In your first single, Life Goes On; it constitues alot past pain that succumbs you. Is this from a personal experience or an "outside-looking-in" story?

JR: "Life Goes On" is definitely a personal experience for me.  I was always the more outcasted student in middle and high school so, the little girl, "little me", represented that aspect of my life.  The other situations in the video represented situations that I see others going thru in their lives and how the choices they make decide their futures.  No matter what choices we make in life, life goes on...that's the message.

AW: Totally feel you on that one... so, How is the music industry treating you so far?

JR: Its treating me well.  The music industry has not slapped me in the face yet, but I'm ready for when it does and ready to keep pushing thru it all.  Life goes on!

Jasmine studied Arabic in Egypt
AW: True... true....(laughs) I hear soo many stereotypes about the music industry. Any stereotypes of female singers and song writers you want to put to rest?

JR: I've never given anyone any physical favors to get where I'm going and that will never change.  That is all.

AW: That should shut alot of people up..... (laughing) By the way, your look is soooo exotic. May I ask what is your nationality?

JR: I am Black and White American.

AW: I was looking into your bio and saw that you studied Arabic in Egypt. Any of your musical influence come from that journey?

JR: Egypt inspired me deeply and continues to inspire me since my return to America.  The language, the culture, the music is all inspiration for me to explore new depths/genres of my style in writing as well and singing.  I am soon to record my first fully Arabic song.  I wrote it a few months ago and I will release it within the coming months!

AW: So, your album is called "Perfect Imperfections". Any significant reason why?

This album is a must have!
JR: I released my first album "Perfect Imperfections" last year, 2009.  The title was inspired by the fact that I am never satisfied completely with anything I do, but I feel like even with its imperfections, somehow my album ended up being perfect!

AW: Thank you so much for this opportunity! I am cheering for you on the sidelines for your future. ....and dont forget about us "little people" ok??! LOL

JR: Thank you sooooo very much for your support! ...and your support means you ARE THE BIG PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO GET ME WHERE I NEED TO BE!

WTF of the Day: T.I . and Tiny arrested on Drug Charges

TIRapper T.I. and his wife were arrested late Wednesday on drug possession charges after sheriff's deputies smelled marijuana coming from their vehicle during a traffic stop.
Sheriff's deputies pulled over the Atlanta-based rapper, Clifford Harris, 29, and his 36-year-old wife, Tameka "Tiny" Cottle, about 10:30 p.m. at 9255 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood.
"During the course of the traffic stop, deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle," L.A. County sheriff's officials said in a statement.
"A narcotics investigation ensued," during which T.I. and his wife "were found to be in possession of a controlled substance," the statement read.
They were taken to the West Hollywood sheriff’s station and booked on drug possession charges.
Sheriff's officials did not specify why the two had been pulled over and what specific drug they had.
T.I., a multiplatinum rapper with such hits as "Whatever You Like" and "Dead and Gone," is on probation after serving seven months in prison on weapons charges. He was released earlier this year.
His album "King Uncaged" is set to release this fall.
Cottle, an R&B vocalist who sang in the group Xscape, has starred in the BET reality series "The Tiny & Toya Show."
Harris and Cottle each posted $10,000 bail and have been released, sheriff's officials said.

Lauryn Hill Returns To Charts For the First Time In A Decade

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn Hill has made her first appearance on Billboard’s singles chart in over decade, thanks to a song that leaked on the internet a few weeks ago.

The song, “Repercussions,” popped up out of nowhere on the internet and caught fans of the singer/rapper/actress off guard.

Though it doesn’t really sound like a finished song, the song managed to garner enough radio airplay that it debuted on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Rap Songs chart at #94.

It’s Lauryn’s first appearance on a singles chart since 1999’s posthumous collaboration with Bob Marley, “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” which peaked at #49 on the charts.

Wyclef Jean In Hiding Due to Death Threats

_48632480_009930350-1
Singer Wyclef Jean says he is in “hiding” after receiving death threats since announcing his plans to run for president of Haiti.

Jean told The Associated Press he had received a series of warnings, including a phone call telling him to “get out of Haiti”.

The singer’s plans have stirred controversy in the Caribbean country with his ex-bandmate Pras Michel and actor Sean Penn among those criticising his bid.

Haiti’s electoral commission has also postponed its ruling on who will be allowed to run for president until 20 August.

Delayed announcement
The commission have said they need more time to consider the applications of those who want to run.

There is a question mark over whether Jean qualifies to run for president under Haitian laws which stipulate a candidate must have lived in the country for five consecutive years. Jean has not.

Wyclef Jean Wants Haitians To Speak English

Wyclef Jean has pledged to boost the teaching of English in Haiti if he wins his bid for the presidency - because "years" of rule by French-speaking politicians has not benefited the country.

Wyclef Jean

The Fugees star confirmed on Thursday he wants to fight for leadership of his homeland, and filed election papers confirming his candidacy. He has brushed off accusations he will struggle to communicate with the mainly French and Creole-speaking citizens - insisting he wants to encourage them to use English as a third language.

Jean tells Larry King Live, "What about my French... seriously, we've had years and years of politicians speaking French. And where has that gotten us? So I do believe that this population should speak French. It should speak Creole. It should also learn English.”

"I left Haiti when I was nine years old. I came to the United States of America. I'm proud that I learned English. And I'm proud when I go back to my country - when I'm communicating with these people in (Creole)."

Was The Source Magazine Right About These “Five Mic” Albums?

With the recent announcement that Bun B’s brand new album, Trill O.G. received a perfect 5-Mic rating from The Source, it’s only fitting that we take a look at all of the albums that have received the coveted rating.

44 albums in the magazine’s history have been given a perfect rating. 29 of them have been given retroactively. The other 14 were received at the time of release. It’s those 14 that we’ll be focusing on here.

The Source was dogged in the early 2000s amidst accusations that a good rating, which had become as important as a Grammy Award, was bought by the artist. While many of their ratings were valid, there were more than a few head scratchers in the magazine’s later years.

A Tribe Called Quest -People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

I remembered two Tribe albums getting five mics, but I always thought it was The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders that got a perfect score. But lo-and-behold, research proves that Marauders only got four mics. While it’s very difficult to listen to an album 20 years after its release and get back to the mindset of the hip-hop fan in 1990, I honestly can say that I never viewed Tribe’s first album as a classic. Does it have classic songs? Most definitely. “Bonita Applebum,” “Can I Kick It?” “Footprints,” “Luck Of Lucien” are all hands down some of the best that hip-hop has ever seen, but the album feels a bit uneven and scattered.

Eric B. & Rakim-Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em

This is another album that I never realized received a perfect rating. Why? Because Eric B & Rakim’s albums got progressively worse as their four album career went on. Rhythm being their third album was not as good as Follow The Leader, and definitely not as good as their debut, Paid In Full (which was awarded 5-mics long after it’s release… a rating I highly contest due to the inclusion of songs like “Chinese Arithmetic,” “Extended Beat,” and, depending on the day you ask, “Eric B Is On The Cut.”) Rhythm’s title track is classic status, as is “Mahogany,” but once again, I never saw this album as being five-mic material.

Ice Cube -AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted

Ice Cube’s split from N.W.A. was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to the rapper, who penned most of the group’s lyrics. His defection from the group led him to leave the west coast for the east where he linked up with the legendary Bomb Squad production crew, who produced all of Public Enemy’s classic albums. The switch in production crews wasn’t as different, as a lot of N.W.A.’s sound had that Bomb Squad-esque, chaotic collage feel. The result of Cube’s collaboration with the Squad resulted in an album that built upon N.W.A.’s penchant for shock factor and married it with Public Enemy’s politics. This album was very unique at the time of it’s release and deserved it’s five-mic rating.

Brand Nubian -One For All

Brand Nubian were almost like a 1990s Miami Heat with three legit soloists-Lord Jamar, Sadat X and Grand Puba-creating a hip-hop rarity: a group with no weak link. Puba’s salacious wordplay was balanced by Jamar’s rugged baritone and Sadat’s nasaled tales from the hood. Hailing from the outer reaches of the New Rochelle they extended the hoods borders a little further north incorporating the 5 Percent teachings with break beats funky enough for the radio and the clubs. One For All spawned two classics “Wake Up” and “Slow Down” along with the title track of this undisputed masterpiece.

De La Soul -De La Soul Is Dead

The Long Island, NY trio one-upped their instant classic debut, 3 Feet High & Rising, on the follow-up. De La Soul Is Dead was a conscious effort to abandon the D.A.I.S.Y. Age/pseudo-hippie image that people associated with them based on their debut. The result was one of the most engaging and interesting hip-hop albums ever released. They toughened up their sound and lyrics without sounding like they were fakin’ the funk yet still kept the sense of humor and quirkiness that made fans and critics alike fall head over heels for 3 Feet High & Rising. Is De La Soul Is Dead perfect? Far from it, but its imperfections are what made the album, as well as De La themselves, endearing and an album that still sounds fresh and fun 19 years later. This one deserved its five mics.

A Tribe Called Quest -The Low End Theory (One of my fav albums of all time!!)

The difference between Tribe’s debut album and their second, The Low End Theory, is like night and day. They may sound similar, but for the first time, Tribe put together a focused album. Though it starts to lag a little towards the end (when’s the last time you listened to “Skypager?”), all is forgotten once one of hip-hop’s greatest posse cuts, “Scenario,” closes out the album. Five mic worthy? One could make a case for giving it four-and-a-half, but anything less than that would be absolutely criminal.

Nas- Illmatic

The album that really sparked the whole craze behind The Source’s mic rating system was Illmatic. Miss Info’s five-mic review of Nas’ debut was both a blessing and a curse for the Queensbridge rapper. His subsequent albums would always be compared to this one and each one seemed more and more disappointing. Illmatic was pure NYC hip-hop — raw, intelligent, rewind-worthy, quotable, and it knocked in the whip. The Source got it right on this one.

The Notorious B.I.G. -Life After Death

With Biggie dying shortly before this album’s release, it’s easy to peg The Source’s five-mic review of his second album as just a nod to an MC that died far too soon. And you’d be right. While Life After Death has no shortage of great songs, it’s length as a double album was it’s biggest flaw. If cut down to a single disc, Life After Death probably could have been better than Ready To Die. But the beauty in this album is that most people probably would not be able to agree on what songs to keep and what songs to trash. However, since we are stuck with all twenty four songs, this album probably should’ve been knocked down to a four-and-a-half, at best.

Outkast -Aquemini

Outkast’s finest moment, hands down, and worthy of about six more mics. We’ll even let “Mamacita” slide.

Jay-Z -The Blueprint

I will be totally honest. I was not checking for Jay-Z until The Blueprint dropped. Jay had singles that I liked, but I didn’t consider myself a fan until The Blueprint. The production was fresh. Jay probably hadn’t been this inspired in the studio since Reasonable Doubt. He captured lightning in a bottle on this album. He’s been chasing this album ever since, and hasn’t come close, with the exception of The Black Album. The Source hit the nail on the head.

Nas -Stillmatic

And here is where The Source’s mic ratings all went downhill. After a string of disappointing albums (hello Nastradamus!), Nas probably sounded better on Stillmatic than on any album since his debut, but this album was nowhere near five-mic worthy. Nas’ album of outtakes and leftovers, The Lost Tapes, was way better than this.

Scarface -The Fix

Scarface is one of hip-hop’s most underrated emcees. When The Fix was released, most of us were expecting a monster album, and based on songs like “Guess Who’s Back” and “My Block” it seemed like that’s what we were going to get. But after listening to the album, it’s hard to understand why the album got a perfect score. Perhaps it was just Scarface’s lifetime achievement award?

Lil’ Kim -The Naked Truth

By this point in the Source’s life cycle, the mic rating system ceased to have any sort of meaning. When it was announced that Lil’ Kim had received a five-mic rating for this album, which featured the song “Lighters Up,” most people agreed that The Source had no authority or credibility left in hip-hop.

Bun B. -Trill O.G.

The Source had the internet all abuzz in the days before it was announced that Bun B’s Trill O.G. had received a five-mic rating. The mag released a list of great albums released in 2010 saying that one of them would receive instant classic status in its upcoming issue. While we have yet to hear the album, Bun B definitely has it in him to release an album worthy of five mics, but is it another situation like The Fix? Is this just a lifetime achievement award, or a consolation for the loss of his partner in UGK, Pimp C?

Lady GaGa Admits to "Occasional" Cocaine Usage

Lady Gaga has urged fans not to follow in her footsteps and take drugs, after confessing she is still an "occasional" cocaine user.

The Poker Face hit-maker has previously admitted to battling a drug addiction when she was a struggling artist living in squalor in New York. She told Rolling Stone magazine, "Sometimes it really freaks me out... when I think about laying in my apartment with bug bites from bedbugs and roaches on the floor and mirrors with cocaine everywhere and no will or interest in doing anything but making music and getting high."

However, in a new interview with Vanity Fair magazine, the singer reveals she's not quite kicked her penchant for illegal substances. She tells the publication she's "terrified of heroin" and does "mostly cocaine". She adds, "I won't lie; it's occasional. And when I say occasional, I mean maybe a couple of times a year."

However, Gaga insists she is not condoning drug abuse and has warned her devotees to avoid taking the path to "disaster" after one particularly scary experience with mind-altering substances.

She says, "I do not want my fans to ever emulate that or be that way. I don't want my fans to think they have to be that way to be great. It's in the past. It was a low point, and it led to disaster. I was completely mental and had just been through so much. I hit rock bottom, and it was enough to send a person over the edge. My mother knew the truth about that day, and she screamed so loud on the other end of the phone, I'll never forget it."

And Gaga has her grandmother to thank for forcing her to take control of her life: "I cried. I told her I thought my life was over and I have no hope and I've worked so hard, and I knew I was good. What would I do now? And she said, 'I'm gonna let you cry for a few more hours. And then after those few hours are up, you're gonna stop crying, you're gonna pick yourself up, you're gonna go back to New York, and you're gonna kick some a**.'"

DMX Goes To Jail.....AGAIN!

Rapper DMX is heading back to jail just weeks after serving a four-month stint behind bars for a probation violation.

This is the DMX I remember....

The gravel-voiced hip-hop star is planning to surrender to authorities and begin serving time in Los Angeles in connection to a reckless driving conviction eight years ago.

TMZ.com reports DMX was placed on probation after he pleaded no contest to the crime, which he has since violated and has been ordered to serve 90 days behind bars.

The rapper's manager insists her client, real name Earl Simmons, is "focused" on taking care of all of his past legal issues so he can move on with his life.

Tragic...indeed.
It's a dark time for DMX - the recently separated from his wife, according to reports.

Tashera Simmons, who wed the rapper in 1999, has stood by her husband throughout his legal troubles, but has decided enough is enough, according to Allhiphop.com.

Tashera is said to have confirmed the separation to the website and announced plans for a new reality TV series, which will show her rebuilding her life with the couple's four children following the split. Now I don't know who will be picking the series up. Yet something just gives a feeling that VH1 might have something in the works. Who knows if DMX can rise up from this, but his fans certainly hope so.

It is reported the rapper has used the recording studio for a decade and got a cheaper rate on the space, according to Allhiphop.com.

He tells In Touch magazine, "I'm still trying to make that manifest. I think it's an odd enough combination, but I think that both of us are able to diversify. I have a lot of respect for her individuality, the daring to be different. And of course, everyone loves 'Poker Face.'"

T.I., real name, Clifford Harris, Jr., spent much of 2009 behind bars for weapons possession.

M.I.A. Hopes To Finish Immigration Woes Before Wedding

M.I.A. refuses to have a "quickie wedding" to mend her immigration woes in America - because she dreams of a grand ceremony when she marries fiance Benjamin Bronfman.

The London-born hip-hop star has previously been locked out of her adopted America over visa issues, brought about by controversial comments she has made about conflict in her parents' native Sri Lanka and her father's alleged links to terrorist group the Tamil Tigers, but now she's back in New York she has been advised not to leave until the immigration problems are solved.

And she's not taking the easy route to get a green card by planning a wedding to Bronfman, the father of her 16-month-old son Ikhyd.

She tells Fader magazine, "That's what they want me to do, but I'm not going to lose my integrity for that s**t... I actually want a nice wedding. I'm not going to blow that.

"If they're gonna kick me out, it's going to be a fight, it's an important fight to have."

In the meantime, M.I.A., real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, insists immigration officials are mistaken about her father: "He negotiated peace processes, brought in the new army, and when he goes to Sri Lanka, the government gives him security against the Tigers."

Usher Admits To Cheating on VH1's "Behind The Music" (Exclusive Video Inside)

Usher is opening up about his personal life including rumors behind his recent divorce, firing his mother and his break up from TLC member Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas on his VH1 'Behind the Music' special. The Grammy winner gets extra candid addressing all of the stories that he has previously stayed mum about and have filled the media for the past six years.

The storybook romance with Chilli fell apart leading up to the release of Usher's 2004 album 'Confessions,' which would became the platform for detailing his infidelity. "The cross that I had to bear was that I cheated," Usher explains.

The two had first through their label when a pubescent Usher was just starting off on his R&B career. Chilli had showed him a dance move that Usher incorporated into one of his first music videos. "I thought she was gorgeous," Usher recalls of first meeting Chilli in his teens. "She walks into the room and I'm like nervous as hell."

"I remember thinking," continues Chilli, "Wow, this little boy is so cute," she says of a pubescent Usher. "Look at his dimples and the eyes. I'm 21 and like ... this is weird." Years later, after Usher finally reached manhood and made it to the top of the charts, the two would begin a relationship that ended in betrayal. "I cheated and it didn't work from there," Usher says.

"I never thought of him cheating," Chilli explains. "I felt like a fool." The title track of 'Confessions' told the tale of a man who cheated on his girlfriend only to get the other woman pregnant. "People were thinking this is all about our relationship," Chilli contends. In reality, the story was a chapter from producer/songwriter Jermaine Dupri's personal life.

Usher also talks about his short lived marriage to his former stylist Tameka Foster, the mother of his two young sons. Fans weren't receptive to his new found romance after rumors of Foster's alleged controlling ways hit the news circuit. Further inflicting speculation that his wife was causing a rift within his family was the fact that Usher fired his mother, Jonetta Patton, as his manager, and she did not attend their wedding. While promoting his fourth album 'Here I Stand,' Usher continuously defended his nuptials, a move that didn't sit well with the public. "It just made me look crazy," he said. "I can't say I've one hundred percent given up on love in that way, but I won't be rushing to get married anytime soon." Since splitting from Foster, he has patched things up with his mother, "retired" her as his manager (for the second time), and reclaimed his top spot on the music charts with the release of 'Raymond v. Raymond.'

With a decade-long career that has had both personal and professional triumphs and pitfalls, the 31-year-old is enjoying the single life, being a dad and doing what he does best -- performing. "Life is an evolution so as I look at the reality of who I've become, I'm very happy," he said.

Usher's 'Behind the Music' airs Monday, July 20 at 8 PM on VH1.

U2 Named Best-Selling Band In the World

U2 has raked in a staggering $130 million over the last 12 months - making the Irish rockers the biggest selling band in the world.

Despite frontman Bono being unable to perform after an operation on his back in May, U2 has still managed to secure its place as the most profitable international group.

According to Forbes.com, the foursome pulled in $130 million over the last year from their 360 Degree world tour and sales of their 2009 album No Line on the Horizon.

In second place was AC/DC, who garnered an impressive $114 million, while Beyonce has made $87 million.

Bruce Springsteen proved he is still The Boss with $70 million, while pop sensation Britney Spears rounds out the top five biggest earners with $64 million.

Beyonce's husband Jay-Z is three behind her at six with $63 million.

Lady Gaga has managed to out-earn her pop idol Madonna - the newcomer made $62 million compared to the Material Girl's earning of $58 million.

Country star Kenny Chesney earned $50 million, with the Black Eyed Peas and Coldplay tying with a haul of $48 million each.

PETA Upset By Janet Jackson

Animal activists have taken aim at Janet Jackson for signing on as the new face of fur firm BlackGlama.

The pop superstar was announced as the brand's new 'What Becomes a Legend Most?' spokes model on Thursday and she'll model high-quality mink items in the ads - and PETA bosses have been quick to react.

Spokeswoman Amanda Schinke says, "It's amazing what celebrities will do when their careers are on a downslide, but we didn't think that Janet was this desperate."

"Surely she knows enough about suffering and unjustified death to recognize that both occur in the production of a fur coat. We are asking her to think again and to donate these stolen skins to be used as bedding for animals orphaned by other human-caused disasters, such as loss of habitat."

Micheal Jackson Neverland....TO BECOME A STATE PARK???

Fans of Michael Jackson may get to visit the King of Pop's Neverland Ranch after all - a Californian lawmaker wants to turn the property into a state park.

The Thriller hit-maker moved out of his Santa Barbara home in 2005 after cops raided it in 2003 following his arrest on child molestation charges. Private equity firm Colony Capital LLC now co-owns the sprawling estate with the Jackson family after the singer signed it over to them for $35 million in 2008.

Now, California assemblyman Mike Davis has suggested declaring Neverland an official state park - an area of land preserved on account of its historic interest, and administered by the Californian government. If his proposal gets the go-ahead, it could mean Jackson's fans will be free to visit the site.

Davis tells the Associated Press, "Given that we have an economic shortfall... I suspect it would be difficult for the State Parks Department to purchase the property alone... I am committed to finding out all details possible to make this a good proposal."

Last year residents in the nearby Santa Ynez Valley rallied against plans to turn Jackson's former home into a tourist attraction.

Weezy To Be Released In November

Rap superstar Lil Wayne is expected to walk free from jail in November after serving just eight months of his year-long sentence.

The Lollipop hit-maker, real name Dwayne Carter, Jr., has been serving time at New York's tough Rikers Island prison since March, after pleading guilty to charges of gun possession. He has been keeping fans updated on his progress behind bars via a specially-dedicated website, but he will soon get to reconnect with his devotees in person - MTV News reports Wayne's projected release date is November 4th.

The hip-hop star will be a free man after eight months of incarceration, providing he continues to abide by jail rules and regulations. Wayne previously found himself in trouble with prison officials when guards reportedly discovered "contraband" in his cell, including iPod earphones and a charger for an MP3 player.

However, Wayne is refusing to let his legal problems silence his music - he will release a new EP when he turns 28 on September 28th.
